The Sapele Power Plant in Delta State has commenced operation with the supply of 225 Megawatts of electricity to the national grid, Minister of Information Labaran Maku confirms.
The Sapele power plant is one of the 10 ongoing power projects under the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP).
The minister, who announced this while briefing State House in Abuja on Wednesday, said the development was made known to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) by Vice President Namadi Sambo.
However, the Vice President is the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on NIPP.
“His Excellency the Vice President brought very, very happy information to the Federal Executive Council which I think we should share with you and this is very dear to the hearts of many Nigerians.
“The Sapele Power Plant has become operational but we are happy to inform Nigerians that the new Sapele Plant has become operational, currently it is giving the nation additional 225 megawatts of electricity.”
According to Maku, some of the ongoing NIPP Projects will also be completed this year, noting that already the nation had started witnessing improved electricity supply across the country.
?“We are happy to say at this stage that there has been appreciable improvement and we are undertaking opinion poll in different parts of the country as far as power supply is concerned.
''We have refused to beat our chest on this matter because we believe that we have not reached there and we don’t want to beat our drums ahead of the real impact that is coming on board.”
Maku assured that government would continue to keep Nigerians well informed on the progress being recorded in the power sector.
