The Governor of Niger state Dr muazu Babangida Aliyu has said that the current Shari a legal system in the state was political and that the state would soon criminalize certain aspects of the law such as marrying more than four wives.
This is an indication that the celebrated Super Polygamous in Bida Niger state, Mallam Bello Masaba may soon be having another legal battle with regards to his marital status with the Niger State Government as the government is set to review the Shari a Laws.
Governor. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu disclosed this yesterday during a courtesy call by the Management of? Law Reform Commission led by the Chairman, Barrister Mohammed Bello at government house? Minna.
This is amidst the several legal battles the state government has been having with Mallam Mohammed Bello Masaba for marrying 86 wives.
Aliyu said? the Sharia law currently on ground was merely “a political Sharia” which cannot convict a serious offender adding that the rising rate of people flaunting the Sharia law gave rise to the need to review the existing Sharia law.
According to him “What we had before my coming on board is simply political Sharia that is why people can do anything under the practice and get away with it because the laws in operation were merely from the penal code”.
The Governor said no law within the Sharia legal system in the state could convict Mallam Masaba when he was arraigned stressing despite the state imposition of the Sharia law, he still escaped the wrath of the Islamic law.
