MTN Nigeria is set to improve its quality of services (QoS) with $1.4 billion (about N2.17 billion) investment for 2012 as it moves to address the increasing upsurge on data service segment due to use of smart phones and dongles for internet browsing which has taken over two third of the bandwidth on the network.?
Mr. Wale Goodluck, Corporate Services Executive, MTN Nigeria, said that the Nigerian operator was going to expand its network by replacing many of its legacy systems with next generation network generation ahead of the commercial take off of West Africa Cable System (WACS) on MTN Nigeria network in April this year.
The WACS cable would be the largest submarine cable with double the capacity of previous cables that have landed in the country. It is expected to relieve the operator of the data offload and would be an open access cable whereby other operators and companies would be allowed to buy bandwidth capacity.
Also, MTN Group which released its financial report for the year ended December 2011 has seen its subscriber base rise? up to 16.2 per cent to 164.5 million, revenue up 9.7 per cent to Rand 121 884 million due to sound growth in Nigeria, South Africa and Iran of 4.1per cent, 7.7 per cent and 20,1 per cent respectively.
MTN will spend about R24.4 billion on its network over the next year. The biggest slice of the investment, at R10.5 billion, will be go into improving its Nigerian network.
