The Faculty of Science University of Lagos (UNILAG) was yesterday gutted by fire as students, staff and fire fighters battled the inferno for several hours.
The inferno which began very early in the morning was? put off around 12 noon.
A source in the information office of the school stated that they could not say specifically the cause of the fire but that it might be due to the high voltage of electricity supply from Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN.
“Those that stopped the fire from spreading to another block were the students and the staff, they played major role by ensuring that things were put under control”, the source said.
LEADERSHIP learnt that part of the properties burnt were the new laboratory with some offices in the faculty of Science.
Another information staff told our correspondent on phone that the Vice Chancellor of the school,? Professor Babatunde Sofoluwe promised to restore the properties burnt as a matter of urgency, saying that the incident would not stop lectures.
“It is just a minor thing. Everything is under control. No cause for alarm. Nobody is sure of what actually caused the fire, but the good news is that everything is under control.”
