The menace of climate change, if not tackled, will deter efforts of various governments at attaining food security,? says Mr Silvanus Dangoji, a lecturer at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
Dangoji said this at a workshop on climate change organised for journalists and rural dwellers at Unguwan Burus village in Ikara Local Government of Kaduna State.
The workshop was organised by `Connecting Gender for Development',?? an NGO.
The lecturer urged developing countries' leaders to proactively address the climate change phenomenon to ensure the attainment of food security in their respective countries.
?He noted that the negative effects of climate change had already manifested through global warming and flooding across many parts of the world, including Nigeria.
In her presentation, Mrs Ngukwase Surma, the Project Director of the NGO, emphasised on the gender implication of climate change.
In their separate contributions, the participants observed that due to changes in rainfall pattern, more than 80 per cent of irrigated farmlands in the area had been lost due to dry season.
?Malam Idris Abdul-Karim, a herdsman and resident of the area noted that many rivers had dried up, leading to misunderstanding between nomads and the communities, especially when they approached the few available rivers with their cows.
?Malam Musa Dogara urged the government to purchase the tree seedlings and distribute them to individuals for planting to cushion the impact of climate change.
In his remarks, Malama Delu Isiyaku observed that climate change had largely contributed to poverty in the country, especially among the womenfolk.
According to her,? women are the first set of people affected by climate change yet they lacked adequated information about the global phenomenon.
