The House of Representatives on Thursday said the alleged N44 million bribery scandal would not deter it from continuing the probe of the Nigerian Capital Market.
Rep. Zakari Mohammed (PDP-Kwara), the Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs, gave this assurance at a news briefing in Abuja
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that on March 20, the Chairman, Rep. Herman Hembe and members of the? Committee on Capital Market, stepped down following? bribery allegation against them.
Mohammed said the development would not stop the committees of the House from carrying out their oversight functions in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.
He cautioned the spokesman for the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) against making further utterances on the matter as the EFCC, ICPC and the House were investigating the matter.
“The spokesman for SEC should be asked to sheathe the sword because committees have been empowered to look at the matter.
“The House has already taken a decision to investigate the matter.’’
The legislator maintained that anything Hembe and SEC say now would influence the work of the committee investigating the matter.
He said the Ethics and Privileges Committee of the House, headed by Rep. Samson Osagie, the Minority Whip, was capable of handling the matter.??
The spokesman added that the allegation would not stop the live telecast of public hearings in the House contrary to reports in some news papers.
According to him, the ethics committee was thinking of carrying out its assignment live on television. (NAN)
