The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Saturday expressed hope over the commitment of the Federal Government and the National Assembly to repositioning public universities in the country.
“The readiness of the government and that of the National Assembly to reposition the public universities is a welcome development, Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie, ASUU President, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone.
The move, he said, would lead to more research and better results in the universities.
Awuzie said: “We are quite happy at the development because for the first time, we have representatives of both the Senate and the House of Representatives in the committee set up on the universities.
“The development will enable the lawmakers, in collaboration with the executive, to have first hand information on the urgent need to reposition our universities.
“The repositioning will make the universities to be ranked among the best anywhere in the world.
The ASUU chief said Nigeria must get its acts right by paying adequate attention to the education sector which, he described, as one of the most critical sectors in any economy.
Awuzie expressed the hope that the involvement of the National Assembly would facilitate the release of funds to tackle critical issues in the universities.
“We are gradually witnessing the much needed turnaround we have been clamouring for.
“The leaders have discovered that the sector had been grossly under-funded over the years and needed quick intervention to stop it from further deterioration,’’ the don added.
Awuzie stressed the need for an enabling environment to enable the universities to contribute their quota to national development.
