An abduction claim this week by al-Qaeda's North Africa branch of a German hostage in north Nigeria shows the Nigeria is now dealing with threats from two terrorist groups.
The group known as al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb claimed the January kidnapping of a German engineer in the northern city of Kano.
The abduction signals the rising influence of the group among extremists in Nigeria, including those belonging to a locally focused radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram.
Boko Haram has carried out increasingly bloody assaults against the nation's weak central government.?
