As the power outages nationwide continue to worsen, most parts of the city of Lagos last week experienced one of its worst blackouts in recent times.?????????????? ????????????????????????
???? This has led to the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) and other stakeholders in Nigeria’s power sector to call for an alternative means of power generation.
?Mr Adeleke Ibrahim, one of the leaders of NUEE, Lagos branch, in a response through a text message to LEADERSHIP yesterday said that the near total outage is not only in Lagos but nationwide. “There is low generation due to insufficient gas to generating stations that mostly depend on gas to operate, which necessitated massive load shedding throughout the nation,” he said
According to him the union's position is for the government to consider other options such as bio-gas. Meanwhile in a communiqué at the end of their bi-annual joint generation/operation planning meeting in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital weekend, the stakeholders, who are mainly managers at the various generation and transmission stations across the country, said that the nation’s huge high quality coal deposits should be exploited for the benefit of power generation.
They stated that Nigeria had a lot of energy resources hence the need to harness the unexploited sources of power generation capacity to boost power supply in the country.
Specifically, the forum harped on the need for the diversification into coal thermal stations in areas of abundant coal deposit like Enugu, Benue, Nassarawa and Kogi States.
?”Also, it has been observed that the country has the potentials for additional hydro-plants at various locations,” they said.
