Sultan Attributes Violence To Lack Of Education

The Sultan of Sokoto, Dr Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, said in Sokoto on Monday that lack of education was the root cause of violence in the country.

Abubakar spoke while receiving the President of the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue in the Vatican, Cardinal Jean Louis Tauran, who paid him a visit in his palace in Sokoto.

He said people were not knowledgeable enough about their religions and as such took issues in the negative.

According to him, our people do not know the similarities between Islam and Christianity due to lack of education.

The Sultan added that it was important that we must always teach adherents the true meaning of religion.

He said that that was because if people had knowledge about the similarities of the two religions there would not be conflict in the polity, the Sultan said

The monarch said the Sultanate Council had a good relationship with the Catholic community in Nigeria and would do its best to strengthen the bond of brotherhood.

Hs said that the town was safe in spite of the unfortunate event that led to the killing of two foreigners few weeks ago in the state.

The Sultan restated his determination to continue to work with Christian leaders to ensure peace in the country.

He appealed to religious leaders to lead by example and work in line with the dictates of the religion.

Earlier, Cardinal Jean Louis Tauran, had stressed the need for dialogue and tolerance among religious groups.

He commended the Sultan for promoting religious tolerance and understanding among the people.

He said that peace was central to any nation's political growth hence the need for active participation among stakeholders in enhancing peaceful coexistence.
