Reps Direct Committee To Investigate Factors Against Efficiency Of Fire Service.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday directed its Committee on Interior to investigate the activities of the Federal Fire Service in order to determine its strength and weaknesses.

The Representatives also mandated the Committee to outline the factors affecting the effectiveness of the service and suggest ways for optimal performance.

The Committee is to report to the House within four weeks.

This resolution followed a motion by Rep. Odebunmi Segun (ACN – Oyo), which was unanimously adopted without debate when put to vote.

The motion was not debated because it was infrastructure and disaster related.

The rule of the House is that motions that are infrastructure related needed no deliberation.

Earlier moving the motion, “Need to Address the Inefficacy of Fire Service in Combating Fire Disaster Across the Federation,” Rep. Segun, noted with concern that Nigerians were losing lives and property to fire which could be voided if the service was efficient in the discharge of its duties.

He said the budgetary allocations for the Federal Fire Service “were mostly far below the required funds for maximum performance.”

According to the lawmaker, the people engage the services of construction firms and other organisations whenever there is an outbreak of fire.

Segun urged his colleagues to support the motion by calling on the relevant Committee to investigate the matter.

The motion was referred to the House Committee for further in puts.

Meanwhile, a bill for an Act to authorise the issue from the Federal Capital Territory Administration Statutory Revenue Fund of the Capital Territory Administration Account , for the total sum of N306 billion? scaled second reading? on the first allotted day.

NAN reports that out of N306 billion, N42 billion is for personnel costs, N44 billion for overhead costs, while the balance of N219 billion is for capital projects.

The bill was brought by the Majority Leader Mulikat Adeola – Akande, and was automatically adopted by the House without debate.
