The Federal Road Safety Corps, Badagry Unit, impounded 80 vehicles during the Easter celebration, an official said on Thursday Lagos.
The Unit Commander, Mr Zubairu Mato, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the vehicles were impounded for alleged overspeeding, poor lighting system and some other traffic offences.
Mato said that the unit carried out a special road safety campaign during Easter to ensure that motorists observed traffic rules during the festive period.
He said that the campaign, tagged “ Operation Good Morning and Good Evening’’, held in the mornings and evenings.
The commander said that the unit was recording reduced road accidents and deaths through increased patrols and penalising of erring motorists.
“We started with public enlightenment campaigns in motor parks tagged “Operation Red Card’’ which was targeted at stopping bad driving habits.
“Last year, we discovered that we had a high rate of crashes on our highways.
“So, in the first quarter of this year, we re-strategised and were able to achieve 60 per cent reduction,’’ he said.
The commander told NAN that the unit recorded three deaths from road accidents in the quarter as against 28 in the first quarter of 2011. (NAN)
