ASUU Decries Irregular Payment Of Salaries In UNN

Mr Aloysius Okolie, the ASUU Chairman, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) chapter, has expressed concern over irregular payment of salaries to the university's staff.

Okolie told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Nsukka on Friday that the staff celebrated the last Easter without salary as they were paid for March after the festival.

“We are worried that for some time now payment of staff salaries has become irregular. Some times the salary will come first, second or even third week of the new month.

“This development does not allow one to plan on how to use his salary since he does not know when it will be paid.

“I urge the university's management to correct this as it was not like this in the past.

“Other federal universities receive their salaries earlier than us.”

Okolie said he had already written the University's authority on the matter, pointing out that the situation was capable of affecting the morale of the workers as well as their productivity.

“Management should know we have families and other responsibilities to take care of.''

When contacted, Prof Malachy Okweze, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), said the delay was not deliberate.

He said the university would be able to pay workers' salaries only when it received the monthly remittance from the Federal Government.

“The university pays as soon as government releases money to it.

“Before, the Federal Government made quarterly remittance to universities but now it is monthly and sometimes it comes late.
