The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), says it will prosecute table water producers that fail to meet the best standard practice in their factories.
Mr Festus Anumba, the Head of Aba Special Zonal Office, gave this warning in an interview with newsmen in Aba on Friday.
He said that the sensitisation workshop held for members of the Association of Table Water Producers of Nigeria (ATWAP), Abia chapter in Aba, last week, was another avenue to convey the message to them.
He said the agency emphasised at that workshop that producers of portable water must ensure their product was good enough for consumption.
Anumba urged them to be self-regulatory and help NAFDAC to ensure that their members were not producing contaminated water for consumption by unsuspecting members of the public.
“The agency will not tolerate any producer disobeying this simple rule of ensuring good manufacturing practice in their factories.’’
He said that re-certification exercise on factories producing table water had begun in Abia as directed by the agency’s Director General, Dr Paul Orhii.
Anumba said that the exercise was aimed at overcoming the myriad of problems in the production of packaged water.
He said that the re-certification was also necessary to capture biometric data of all clients and stakeholders of products regulated by the agency.
He said that this would ensure a strong data base which would make regulation much easier.
Anumba urged the producers to comply with the directive by registering with their various branches.
