The Nigerian Bar Association has renewed its quest for the emergence of true federalism in Nigeria.
The Chairman of the Ikeja branch, Lagos chapter, Mr. Adegbamigbe Omole told journalists yesterday, that the annual Law week of the Branch, slated for next week would address the issue of true federalism. The programme is titled “The Quest for True Federalism in Nigeria: How Attainable.”
“There is no doubt that Nigeria is at a crossroads. The question on the mind of every average Nigerian is how the country should be restructured. This question is brought about by the perceived imbalance and injustice in the country, “Omole said.
He blamed the loss of autonomy of the federating units that make up the country on the incursion of the military.
“The incursion of the military in 1966 brought about a new system in which the federating units lost autonomy and become subservient to the? federal military government, thus the beginning of this unending journey of unitarism,”
Omole further reiterated that the agitation by different ethnic nationalities and groups has brought to the “front burner the need to take a logistic look at our present political system.”
The NBA Chairman said that “our failure to make progress economically, politically and socially is as a result of our system of government.”
The guest speakers of the event, include Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Professor Pat Utomi , Mr. Alao Aka-Bashorun, Professor Akin Oyebode, Mrs. Funke Adekoya, Mr. Femi Falana, Governor Rochas Okorocha, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Senator Abiola Ajimobi and Chief Folake Solanke.
Some other activities lined up for the week; include Church and jumat services, lectures, Law clinic and prison in the company of the Chief judge of Lagos, Justice Inumidun Akande.
