Heavily armed robbers, on Thursday stormed a first generation bank at Mbari Street, Owerri and made away with some undisclosed sum of money, shooting and injuring four officials in the process.
The incident, according to an eyewitness account, occurred at 6:30pm when the bank had officially closed for the day.
He said the robbers, who were about seven in number, gained entrance into the main office of the bank after smashing its security door. The four bank officials sustained injuries during a heavy shootout by the robbers in an attempt to break into the strong room of the bank.
Briefing journalists, the state commissioner of police, Christopher Dega said the quick intervention of his men saved the day as they overwhelmed the robbers in a shootout.
But LEADERSHIP WEEKEND’s checks revealed that the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) of the bank was burgled while cash deposits were carted away.
Responding, the Imo State governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha condemned the act and thanked the security agencies for their quick intervention. He also visited the injured bank staff at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri where they are responding to treatment.
