The epileptic power supply currently being experienced in some parts of the country, particularly in Lagos State is to witness an improvement by the end of this month. Two power plants Egbin and Olorunsogo which are the major power sources to Lagos and its environs are set to up their power supply by 1,300 MW.
The Managing Director of Egbin Power Plant Mike Uzoigwe confirmed that efforts were being intensified to put back the units that are down at the power station. According to him, two of the six units that have been down for some time are now working.
The Eghin power plant, LEADERSHIP gathered will soon peak at 800 MW before the end of this month because of the renewed efforts to fix the plant. With an installed capacity of 1,320 MW the plant has gone down from 800 MW to 400 MW in the past one month leading to near total black out in Lagos and its environs.
Meanwhile, the new gas pipeline to Olorunsogo will be completed by the end of the month. According to
the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) the pipeline is to supply about 800 million standard cubic feet (mscf) of gas to the plant. This is to up its current generating capacity from 150 MW to 400 MW.
?NNPC said the project which will soon be completed was necessitated because the old pipeline from Ewekoro is of small diameter and produces gas pressure that is inadequate to support the turbines.
According to them the project was to be completed in 12 months but now is being completed within six to seven months. NNPC group General Manager, Public Affairs, Dr. Livi Ajuonuma, who commended the contractor, Jaihind Morpol said that they have been able to deploy the best expertise and materials to make the job a quality one as well as getting it done at record time.
‘Once we are done with this project we will be providing additional gas to the pipeline to supply gas to Olorunsogo. We are expecting about 800 million standard cubic feet from Chevron and also from NPDC and these are due in the next two months. We are going to inspect the gas supply pipeline from Gbaramatu on the Excravos-Western line, which is to provide gas to Itoki Natural Gas Export Terminal. Once this is achieved, the major infrastructure bottleneck in the supply of gas to Olorunsogo would have been solved and the plant will be able to perform up to its installed capacity’ they said.
