The Lagos State Police command on Tuesday announced the arrest of five suspected armed robbers and the recovery of some arms and suspected stolen vehicles.
The command's spokesman, SP Joseph Jaiyeoba, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the suspects were arrested within the last four days.
According to him, the suspects are being questioned at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti.
Jaiyeoba said three of the suspects were arrested on April 14, at Akilo road, Ogba, by policemen attached to Pen-Cinema, following a tip-off.
He explained that one locally-made double-barrel shotgun and three live cartridges were recovered from the suspects.
He said that the fourth suspect was arrested on April 13, at Cornerstone Estate, Alausa, by residents, who alleged that he attempted to steal a Toyota Camry car at the estate.
According to him, the suspect’s accomplices escaped arrest and are still at large.
Jaiyeoba said the fifth suspect was arrested on April 13, by a team of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), following a tip-off.
He explained that the suspect was picked up near his residence in Akerele in Agege, with a stolen Toyota Rav4 Jeep with Reg. No JJJ 535 AA.
“Upon interrogation, he opened up that the car snatcher (names withheld), of no fixed address in Oshodi, gave him the car to sell.
“One locally-made pistol and five cartridges were recovered from him,’’ Jaiyeoba said, adding that the suspect also confessed to snatching the Jeep on March 20, at the Oko Oba area.
He also disclosed that one single barrel shotgun and one live cartridge were recovered on April 15, at No. 3 Aimasiko St., Oshodi.
According to him, the firearm was abandoned by hoodlums on motorcycles, who attempted to rob a victim of his Toyota Corolla car.
Jaiyeoba advised members of the public to be more vigilant and report any suspicious character to the nearest police station for necessary action.
He re-stated the command's readiness to combat crime in Lagos State as all area commands and divisions have men on 24-hour patrol. (NAN)
