A fatal accident at Gako Village along Nassarawa Eggon-Akwanga road, yesterday, led to the death of a middle-aged man just as six persons sustained various degrees of injuries.
It was gathered that the accident occurred around 3:30 pm when a blue pick-up van marked XB 958 LFA which the victims were travelling in reportedly lost control and fell into a ditch. The vehicle went up in flames.
An eyewitness, Esla Alumbugu who could not contain his tears, told LEADERSHIP SUNDAY at the scene of the accident that “the accident was obviously caused by break failure because the driver had serious struggle with the steering before finally falling in a ditch near the road side.”
When our correspondent visited scene of the accident, sympathizers were seen making frantic efforts to put off the fire on the vehicle just as some were offering first aid assistance to the victims.
The rescue team of Federal Road Safety Commission was prompt as they arrive the scene of the accident and evacuated the victims to an undisclosed hospital in Nassarawa Eggon town.
An official of the FRSC who prefers anonymity said available evidences pointed to a break failure and appealed to motorists to refrain from using vehicles without functional breaks.
Our correspondent reports that the Nassarawa Eggon-Akwanga road has for long been prone to accidents due to the existence of potholes and its sloppy nature, a factor which prompted the award of multi-million naira contract for its alignment.
However, months after the award of the contract and formal commencement of work, motorists who spoke to LEADERSHIP SUNDAY said they were still skeptical as the road project is moving at a snail like pace.
