At least 30 members of the Hisbah Board in Kano have sustained various degrees of injuries following a bloody clash between them and some miscreants at Kwanar Gafan Tomatoes Market, on an outskirt village of about 25 km from the ancient city.
Trouble started when the former raided the area in search of prostitutes.
The incident which took place Sunday morning ended on a sad note, as it left a trail of injuries of over 30 Hisbah guards and some of the arrested prostitutes.
According to an eye witness, members of the Hisbah board had raided the area in an organised assault to rid the area of prostitutes but residents of the area who felt aggrieved with the development fought back as they blocked the road and attacked the Hisbah officials, leading to the injury of 30 of the officials.
Our source said that officials of the board had successfully raided and arrested 95 suspected whores during the operation but were prevented from taking them away as the aggrieved hoodlums blocked the road and pounced on them.
An eye witness said that shortly after the operation, a group of miscreants who were said to be hiding with dangerous weapons laid an ambush on the Hisbah guards, descended on them with machetes and other dangerous weapons.
A heavy fight ensued between the officials and the miscreants who out-numbered and over powered them.
Spokesman of the Hisbah board, Musa Tanko Muhammad who confirmed the incident, said that over three of their members were left with multiple fractures, while one suffered dislocation on his jaw. All the 30 injured persons have been admitted at the Murtala Muhammad Hospital where they are receiving treatment.
Muhammad further explained that of the 95 prostitutes arrested in the raid 43 tested positive to HIV/AIDS and have since been taken to the intensive care units of the IDH Hospital of the state for further care.
The arrested persons, he however said, would soon be arraigned in a court of law to face criminal charges.
