Mr Richard Akinbosotun, the Commercial Services Manager at Tin-Can Island Container Terminal (TICT), on Tuesday said no life was lost in the Monday tanker explosion at the terminal.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that one diesel tanker? exploded in the course of fuelling the Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes at about 6.00 p.m.
According to him, the hose used in syphoning fuel into the machines pulled out and the contents spilled on the petrol generator which made the tanker to explode.
The manager said that he immediately called for the assistance of the Lagos State Fire Service and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to put out the fire.
Akinbosotun said that the fire was prevented from spreading because the terminal had? many access ways.
He said that the 10 containers that were affected were laden with ceramic tiles which were not damaged.
The manager told NAN that the terminal’s capacity had increased from 14,000 TEUS (containers) when it took over at inception to 20,000 TEUS (containers). (NAN)
