The interim President of Guinea Bissau, Raimundo Pereira and Prime Minister Carlos Gomes were released by the country’s military junta and flown to Abidjan on Friday.
The West Africa correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ousted political leaders arrived in the country at about 9 p.m., accompanied by security operatives.
Pereira told newsmen:“We are happy to be home in Cote d’Ivoire. We happy that ECOWAS intervened at the appropriate time.’’
The two political leaders were received by the Ivorian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Daniel Duncan and the Chief of Army Staff, Soumaila Bakayoko.
ECOWAS Heads of States had on Thursday approved deployment of soldiers to the country to restore order and directed the coup plotters to release the interim president and the prime minister.
The Heads of States also directed the coup plotters to hand over power to the civilian government. (NAN)
