The Director of network, partnership and mobilisation, National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adults and Non-formal Education (NMEC) Mr. Vincent Nemebioka has disclosed that the commission is working on the development of a curriculum for training programmes at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Women Rehabilitation Centre.
This he said is to standardise the activities of the centre, where repentant commercial sex workers are trained in various vocational skills.
Nemebioka, who disclosed this during a tour of facilities at the centre, noted that even though the training activities carried out at the centre were of non-formal education format, there was a need for them to be standardised.
He lamented that such centres across the country despite their laudable activities had not been certified, a development that had affected the acceptance of graduates from there in the labour market, adding that this informed why the commission was determined to certify the programmes run at the centre to meet international standard.
The director also commended the FCT Social Development Secretariat for the sustained interest in the sustenance of the programme.?
In her remarks, the National Coordinator, Society Against Prostitution and Child Labour in Nigeria (SAP-CLN) Mrs. Grace Adogo, whose NGO is managing the centre disclosed that the centre had graduated and empowered over 600 persons in the last one year.
“We came up with the idea of rehabilitating those have been lost back into the society. We met with the FCT administration and we were given the go-ahead to collaborate with them in that area,” she said.
