Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima has commended President Goodluck Jonathan in his committed efforts to resuscitate the ceding Lake Chad. This is even as he said that the lake and adjoining areas have strong agro-economic relevance to the people of Borno State and the country.
The Governor made the remark on Monday in N’Djamena, Republic of Chad as a member of the delegation to the 14th summit of Heads of state and governments of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) which was attended by President Jonathan alongside the host President Idris Derby and those of Niger and Central African Republics while heads of governments of Cameroon and Libya were represented. The commission has six countries as members.
Shettima said millions of Borno people rely on water from the Lake Chad basin for agricultural activities which makes Borno State the major stakeholder in Nigeria’s membership of the LCBC.???????????
Governor Shettima said that his government was impressed with President Jonathan for making Nigeria one of two member states that meets their financial obligations to the commission as declared at the summit in the presence of other Presidents whose states have not been making payments as announced at the summit. ????
