Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal yesterday said that the Lower House will be working through its relevant committees overseeing indicted government agencies and anti graft agencies to ensure implementation of its probe report of the Federal Government’s petroleum subsidy programme.
Tambuwal made the disclosure while allaying fears expressed by visiting members of Nigeria’s organised labour over reported plans to kill the report of the Farouk Lawan-led panel.
A delegation of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) led by their presidents, Abdulwahed Ibrahim Omar and Peter Esele respectively paid the House Speaker a courtesy visit.
“It is not that the matter is beyond our purview, our committees and anti-corruption agencies will do a follow up of this report whether anybody likes it or not,” the Speaker said.
Omar who described the investigation as “a very diligent work” said, “Unfortunately, we have started hearing about a lot of insinuations, a lot of rumours going round over what is going to likely happen and what is not likely to happen.”
Assuring the Speaker of the support of the organised labour, especially in the bid to protect the interest of Nigerians, the NLC president added: “Anybody in position of leadership must be there because of the mandate given to them by the people and of course, Nigerians must be heard whenever they feel they have been short-changed.
“It is something that Nigerians will not be able to live with. What followed (nationwide strike) was a thing of the past. And at the end of the day we arrived somewhere.
“The House took a very reasonable decision as people who are truly representatives of Nigerians but of course the Executive arm does not yield to that,” Omar noted.
