Vice-President Namadi Sambo has called on adherents of all religions in Nigeria to embrace peace and live in peace with one another.
Sambo made the call on Saturday in Abuja, when he received the national executive officers of Nasrul-Lahi Fatih Society (NASFAT) who paid him a courtesy call.
A statement by Malam Umar Sani, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Vice-President, quotes Sambo as commending NASFAT for sensitising Muslims to their responsibilities in the society.
Sambo also lauded the organisation for its efforts to educate the Muslim community about the tenets of Islam in the last 17 years.
He stressed that Islam was a religion that promoted peace, adding, however, that certain groups and associations used the teachings of Islam wrongly.
Sambo thanked the leadership of NASFAT for supporting nation-building efforts, pledging the government’s support for the organisation.
He noted that President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration had fulfilled his pledge to organise credible elections, adding that it was committed to its transformation agenda, which was on course.
Speaking, Sheikh Sheriff Yusuf, the National President of NASFAT, said that the purpose of their visit was to pledge their support for the Jonathan-administration.
He thanked Sambo for accepting to be the Special Guest of Honour in the forthcoming symposium being organised by NASFAT.Yusuf, who bemoaned the current security challenges facing the country, conveyed the willingness of NASFAT to assist in enlightening the citizens about Islam and its tenets, particularly its abhorrence of violence.
