The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) has sacked 15 members of its enforcement squad for corruption and compromise.
Speaking to members of the squad before the disengagement of the 15 members, the Director, AEPB, Mr. Isa Shuaibu said their sack would serve as a lesson to others.
“Even though it is saddening, I will not hesitate to sack anyone found compromising. This action is to ensure that we maintain a high level of transparency, dedication and punctuality. You will be sacked on the spot if you are caught collecting money from hawkers to allow them hawk or if hawkers are found in your beat,” he warned.
Shuaibu maintained that he would not spare anyone found compromising irrespective of the person’s relationship with the superiors.
He lamented that most members of the enforcement squad had betrayed the trust reposed on them as they were not living up to their expectation of ridding the streets of Abuja of hawkers.
According to him: “The government called you and gave you an opportunity to be useful and at the same time make a living for yourselves but you have been functioning below expectations.”
He further revealed that the board was considering putting in place an incentive in place to motivate the enforcement squad to perform gallantly and optimally.
