A human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, on Friday berated the Lagos State Government for threatening to evict the recently sacked 788 doctors from their official quarters.
Falana, who spoke with journalists on the issue in Ikeja, said the government's action was unconstitutional.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the doctors were sacked for embarking on strike and the state government on Thursday issued an ultimatum asking them to vacate their quarters.
He said: “If you must sack anybody for embarking on a strike, you must go to the National Industrial Court.
“When you failed to do that, then you are only inviting anarchy because a government has a duty to uphold the rule of law.
“Under the constitution, if you acquire an accommodation under terms of employment, you become a contractual tenant.
“Nobody in Nigeria has the right to eject anybody forcefully because that duty is imposed on the Sheriff of the court,'' Falana added.
He reasoned that Lagos State Government, as an advocate of the rule of law and a beneficiary of several Supreme Court judgements on such matters, should have taken a legal option to settle the matter.
Falana said: “I am not talking about whether what the doctors did was right or wrong.
“What I am simply saying is that the government should have taken the doctors to court, if they don't like what they are doing.'' (NAN)
