Niger State House of Assembly has impeached the Speaker, Hon Mohammed Tsowa Gamunu? and elected the Chairman of the House Committee on Labour, Hon Isah Kawu representing Bida I as the new speaker.
LEADERSHIP had reported exclusively last week about the schism in the House over leadership tussle and the intervention of Peoples Democratic party(PDP) to resolve the matter.
The impeachment notice signed by 20 out of the 27 members? saw other? principal officers of the House, Deputy Speaker Ahmed Bello, Majority Leader, Dada Bosso? and Saudatu Kolo, the Majority Whip, also impeached.
The impeachment motion was moved by the House Committee Chairman on Information, Bashar Lokogoma representing Wushishi constituency and seconded by the member representing Kontogora 2, Abdullahi Pawa.
The House thereafter endorsed the nomination of Isah Kawu as Speaker, Engineer Abdulrahaman Gambo representing Borgu constituency as Deputy Speaker, Hon. Yusuf Kure representing Paikoro constituency as Majority Leader, Mohammed Nurudeen as Minority leader, Mohammed Nazeer representing Rijau constituency as Majority Whip and Mohammed Bala Faruq, Bida 2 as Minority whip.
LEADERSHIP observed that before the impeachment proceedings in the House, the former speaker, Hon. Gamunu walked out of the House throwing it into chaos for about 30 minutes before normalcy returned.
Speaking to LEADERSHIP, the mover of the motion for the impeachment of the speaker, Hon. Bashar Lokogoma said the move for the impeachment of the leadership of the House had been on for over eight months because the members believed that the House leadership was no longer working in the interest of the people of the state which included inability of the House to sit for a long time.
Also speaking, member representing Lapai constituency, Hon. Usman Magaji said it was within the right of the House to change its leadership so far as it was in the interest of the people.
