The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is putting in place modalities towards ensuring that disaster management is incorporated into secondary school curriculum.

The director general of NEMA, Mohammed Sani Cedi, disclosed this in Abuja at a recent quiz competition organised by Abubakar Jimoh, a serving corp member in collaboration with the parastatal.

The quiz competition which involved four secondary schools selected by the Federal Capital Territory Education Board, Government Secondary school Garki came first, followed by Government secondary school Tuduwa, while Regina Pacis College Garki clinched the third position.

The director general who presented gifts to the schools commended the efforts of the participant schools for displaying a rich knowledge on the activities of NEMA and on current events in the country.?

Alhaji Sani said the event was a successful and wonderful initiative, adding that the move was in line with NEMA current paradigm shift from giving out relief material to victims of disaster to educating people on disaster risk prevention,reduction and response.

Mr Mohammed also pointed out that discussion is currently going on with the minister of Education to have disaster risk reduction incorporated into secondary schools curriculum, adding that at the higher institution of learning, six universities are currently offering master certificate in disaster management.

Speaking further, the director encouraged the students to educate their fellow students and family members on disaster risk reduction, while pointing out that more avenues will be created by NEMA to educate members of the public on preventative and response strategies? in the face of disaster.
