A joint taskforce of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) yesterday demolished a bar attached to La Monde Hotel, located at Michika Street, Garki 2.
The hotel is said to be owned by a serving governor.
Speaking with journalists at the demolition site, the assistant director, monitoring and enforcement, Nathaniel Atibije denied that the exercise was not politically motivated but was part of the council’s routine exercise.
He said: “What we have removed is simply inconsistent with the standards of development control. It’s a bush bar and it doesn’t have approved designe. We have no idea of who owns the building, I’m not a politician, and we’re just doing our work.”
After removing the bush bar, the officer’s however stalled the demolition.
Explaining the rationale behind the action, Atibije said, “We want to avoid mistakes as much as possible; we were just informed by the management that they have approvals for some of the structures which they have promised to present to the district officer tomorrow morning.”
The department also demolished over 10 shanties on Gimbiya Street during the exercise, saying the shanties were discovered during routine monitoring of the district.
