The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appointed the Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre, Bida, Dr Alaba George-Okuku as its new patron.
In his acceptance speech shortly after the appointment? by the Senate President of NANS, Mr Kolade Olaluwa, in Bida, Dr George-Okuku thanked the students for the honour done to him and urged Nigerian students to? join hands in the on-going efforts to rebuild? the country’s democracy by shunning all negative tendencies that could destroy its foundation.
The Medical Director tasked Nigerian students to imbibe the spirit of indigenous students in the post independence era who used their movements as student activists to fight for democracy in Nigeria.
He advised students not to allow themselves to be used by aggrieved politicians who may want to settle political scores.
George-Okuku also? charged Nigerian students to be good ambassadors of the country by not indulging in acts capable of denting the image of the country.
He said they must strive not to disappoint their parents and country by being good citizens.
According to him,” students were very vital to the economic and socio-political development of any nation”. He commended the efforts of Nigerian students in ensuring the unity of the country.
He said the appointment was a challenge to him to? work harder in his service to the nation.
Speaking at the occasion, the Senate President of NANS, Mr Kolade Olaluwa said the appointment? was based on his achievements and track records in the development of the nation at large.
