National Strategy On Anti-Graft Under Way – IATT

The Inter Agency Task Team (IATT) on anti graft war, made up of the EFCC, ICPC, NEITI, Code of Conduct and 17 other government agencies, has advocated a holistic national strategy to combat endemic corruption in the country.

The agencies said that the national strategy to combat corruption was aimed at providing an entry point for all citizens as well as provide a handle for monitoring and evaluation just as it stressed that there was the need to involve diverse actors from both government and non-government sectors in the fight due to its magnitude and endemic nature.

Speaking at meeting with stakeholders in Abuja recently, Coordinator of the IATT and Head, Technical Unit on Governance and Anti-Corruption Reforms (TUGAR), Lilian Ekeanyanwu, noted that the approach was in accordance with global good practices in line with the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).

She said, ‘‘while a myriad of structures, institutions, laws and initiatives to promote public accountability and fight corruption have been introduced since the return to civil rule in 1999, the investments made by subsequent governments in the fight against corruption are yet to deliver on the objective of effectively preventing and combating corruption in the management of public resources and public affairs.

“A key challenge affecting the fight against corruption in Nigeria is the location of anti-corruption functions within multiple and operationally diverse institutions, which, despite their closely related and even overlapping mandates, have limited interface and cooperation and seldom coordinate policies and operations,” she said.
