The Edo Consultative Forum (ECF) has commended the federal government for re-naming University of Lagos in honour of the late M.K.O. Abiola but stressed that the manner with which it was carried out was faulty.?
In a statement signed by its director of media and publicity, Mr. Matthew Aramunde, in Lagos, yesterday, the forum noted that the honour was overdue, stressing that the history of Nigeria’s democracy will not be complete without noting the contributions of the late Abiola.
It stressed that government should have been aware that it was by an act of parliament in 1965 that the ivory tower came into existence and therefore, could not effect a change of name of the institution in a manner shrouded in controversy.
“We are celebrating 13 years of uninterrupted civilian rule in Nigeria. Many people have paid the supreme price to ensure we gain and sustained democracy; among whom were M.K.O. Abiola and his wife Kudirat Abiola.
Meanwhile, the Radio Television Theatre and Arts Workers (RATTAWU) has commended President Goodluck Jonathan for renaming the University of Lagos (UNILAG) after late Moshood Abiola.
RATTAWU President Yemisi Bamgbose, who made the commendation in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday, said that immortalising Abiola’s name was long overdue.
