The remains of the late vice chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) now Moshood Abiola University (MAU), Prof. Babatunde Shofoluwe was yesterday laid to rest at the Ikoyi Vaults, Lagos.
The burial rites began since Friday, May 25, 2012 with a special Jumat prayer at the university mosque, followed by services of songs by various groups and departments which ended with a funeral service at the All Saints Church, Montgomery road, Yaba, Lagos where the deceased worshipped until his last day.
The church service was earlier preceded by a lying-in-state ceremony at the sports complex of the university, was witnessed by a mammoth crowd of sympathisers that included top hierarchy of the university, the widow, Funmilayo Sofoluwe, students and staff of the institution.
The lying in state ceremony conducted peacefully without protest however had the heavy presence of stern looking armed policemen at the entrance of the university.
The corpse in a black Mercedes Benz hearse was led to the church by the acting VC, Prof. Rahman Ade Bello who was joined by other personalities like both Lagos and Ekiti state governors, Mr. Raji Fashola and Mr. Kayode Fayemi, and the deputy governor of Delta State, Mr. Amos Utuama. The diocesan bishop, Rev. Adebayo Akinde who delivered the sermon charged Nigerians to examine their ways of life before death comes calling unannounced.
