A 300-level student of Physics and Astronomy of University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Mr. Onyebuchi Okonkwo yesterday committed suicide over a yet-to-be ascertained reason.
A source told our correspondent that the deceased hung himself in an uncompleted building at cricket pitch of the Franco Hostels’ area of the institution, leaving the university community in shock yesterday morning.
Confirming the incident, the Dean, Student Affairs Department of the University, Prof. Chukwuemeka Oyeoku, described it as unfortunate.
“No matter the problem, committing suicide is not the best. There is no problem shared with friends and relations that will not be solved. Today is a sad day for the university,” he said.
Also commenting on the incident, a friend of the deceased, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told newsmen that Onyebuchi was not a poor student.
He said: “He (Okonkwo) was studying on Shell and MTN scholarships, so I’m surprised and shocked at what could have led him to take his life. We attended lecture together on Wednesday afternoon at the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Development Research.
“He sent text messages to me and some other friends around 11:43pm, to come and meet him at the cricket pitch; only for us to go and discover he had committed suicide. One of his brothers is a manager in one of the banks, only God know what happened. Onyebuchi has no problem with anybody.”
The remains of the deceased have been removed by the police and deposited at the university’s medical centre mortuary.
