Residents of Ogombo community in Eti-Osa Local Council Development Area (LCDA), of Lagos State, now have access to potable water, courtesy of the Finance team of Stanbic IBTC Bank, who donated a borehole, with a water treatment plant and a 2,000-litre capacity tank accessories to the community. In addition to enhancing convenience, the facility is expected to reduce water-borne diseases in the riverine community.
The staff volunteerism project aligns with the Corporate Social Investment policy of the Standard Bank Group which aims to improve the wellbeing of people across different communities.
Morin Adeyemi, Manager, Corporate Social Investment and Tosin Odutayo, Head of Investor Relations, both of Stanbic IBTC Bank, handed over the facility to Mr. Samad Oseni Ogunbo, Supervisor for Works and Housing, Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area and Mr.? Memudu Bakare, Chairman, Community Development Association (CDA), Ogombo Town, recently.
In her opening address, the manager, CSI, Mrs. Adeyemi said the exemplary donation of the water facility to Ogombo town by the Finance team will afford more people resident in Ogombo town unfettered access to potable water. She added that the team embarked on the project as a result of the internalisation of the bank’s corporate social investment philosophy which is anchored on three critical areas of societal needs. These are economic empowerment, education and health.
Mr. Odutayo, Head of Investor Relations, said the Finance team is delighted to hand over the borehole to the community for the benefit of its people who hitherto faced serious challenges in obtaining potable water. “Ogombo town is the first community to benefit from our intervention programme under the health portfolio of the bank.
Our previous project was in the education portfolio, and this was achieved through refurbishment of classrooms, and donation of computers and skills. The bank supports staff volunteerism, by matching 50 per cent of the total project commitment, enabling the team to fulfill the passion for volunteerism and giving back to the community”.
Mr. Ogunbo, Supervisor for Works and Housing, Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area, who spoke on behalf of the community, commended Stanbic IBTC Bank for taking the initiative to support the Ogombo community, stating that the borehole donation will in no small measure enrich the lives of the people. He pledged that the community will make good use of the facility and will imbibe a maintenance culture to sustain the benefits of the facility.
Ogunbo urged other corporate organisations in the country to emulate the example of Stanbic IBTC Bank and others who are touching the lives of Nigerians by giving back to the society and community where they operate and earn their income.
