Super Eagles Beat Namibia 1-0

The Nigerian Super Eagles yesterday began the quest for a place at the 2014 FIFA World Cup on a good note with a slim 1-0 win over the Brave Warriors of Namibia in Calabar. The victory gave the Nigerian side the needed maximum three points at stake.

The goal came at the 39th minute of the second half through Kalu Uche, whose performance was outstanding throughout the game. Nigeria now tops its group with a game next weekend away to Malawi. The Namibian side which came to Nigeria with an intention of picking a point battled frantically to equalize by making two substitutions with no luck. Although the Namibians attacked fiercely during the extra time of four minutes added, the Super Eagles dominated the encounter from the blast of the whistle.

This is the first round of games in the group, which also have Kenya and Malawi.

Also, at other 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Sudan joined the Black Stars as leaders in Group D after the opening day matches, but Ghana are ahead on superior goal difference. Twenty-four hours after one of Ghana’s biggest victories on domestic soil, the Nile Crocodiles of Sudan defeated African champions, Zambia 2-0 at home. This put them at par with the West Africans.

Bafana Bafana escaped with a 1-1 draw against Ethiopia in their opening 2014 World Cup qualifier in Phokeng, outside Rustenburg. The Ethiopians nearly compounded more misery on the struggling hosts, who are now winless in seven matches, and were 13 minutes away from a stunning result in a match marred by poor local attendance.
