Minister of Finance, Mrs Ngozi Okonjo Iweala has disclosed that the federal government has set up a committee that will audit and review the operation of airlines in the country.
This is coming on the heels of recent Dana air crash in Lagos that resulted in the death of 159 people.
The minister who was responding to a request by one of the stake holders made the government position known during a Town Hall meeting she held with members of the business community in Kano, Saturday.
Although she did not disclosed the strength and membership of the committee the minister said frequent air mishaps in the country where lives and properties are lost was worrisome and government must act fast since everybody in the country need effective services of airlines.
According to the minister, appropriate measures would soon be put in place to ensure safe and efficient operation of the airlines in order to streamline their operations and guarantee safety of people’s lives.
She said that machinery has already been set in motion to provide the needed support to the sector adding that government’s intervention was to guarantee the safety of lives and property of the people that needed the services of the airlines.
On the creation of jobs in the country, the minister said the federal government has come up with so many initiatives that would provide opportunities to skilled and unskilled youth and women in the country, adding that funds and logistics would be provided to ensure smooth running of programs and services in the country.
