The acting Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, has ordered the police “to ensure that security is provided in and around all unity schools and Federal Government Colleges within their areas of jurisdiction''.
This is sequel to media reports of an attack on the Federal Government College, Kano, in which two persons were killed.
The police, however, denied that such an attack took place.
A statement issued in Abuja by the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Mr Frank Mba, on Tuesday said the story was “entirely false'' and that no security breach occurred within or around the school premises.
“We wish to state that, the story is false in its entirety and that no gun attack or any form of security breach took place within or around the school premises,’’ it said.
The statement appealed to users of the social media and other forms of mass communication to exercise restraint and show responsibility while disseminating information on national security.
“We wish to advise members of the public to always cross check their information with appropriate police authority before going to the press in order to avoid spreading fear and other psychological trauma associated with such false stories.’’
The management of the school also denied that gunmen attacked the college but admitted that two of its day students were killed outside the school premises.
The Vice-Principal (Administration), Mrs Elizabeth Kasuwa, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano that five “de-boarded'' SS3 students were attacked by unidentified gunmen outside the school premises.
Kasuwa said that the five students, all males, were taking their final examinations and were, therefore, “de-boarded''.
She explained that the school management had visited Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, where corpses of the two students had been deposited.
She said that the three other students who sustained injuries in the attack were receiving treatment in the emergency ward.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Police Command said the reports were “baseless and unsubstantiated''
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Rilwanu Dutse, told NAN on Tuesday that the report was “baseless and unsubstantiated’’.
“It is very unfortunate such reports are coming out without verification,” DSP Rilwan Dutse, the command's Public Relations Officer, said.
He said that some unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle had attacked six civilians in a shop at Layin Masallachi in Yar Akuwa quarters of Tarauni Local Government area on Monday evening.
He said that two people were killed while four others sustained injuries and had been rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
The PPRO said that investigation into the incident had started.
