The Alakenne of Ikenne, Oba Adeyinka Onakade, was on Monday night attacked by gunmen suspected to be assassins.
The traditional ruler was attacked alongside his lawyer, Omosanya Solaja, in his palace in Ikenne, Ogun.
Solaja, a former member of Ogun House of Assembly, who reportedly sustained some machete cuts, was also thrown down from a storey building.
The gunmen, numbering six, reportedly stormed the traditional ruler's palace located on Bankole Street, Ikenne, around 7.45 p.m.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that Oba Onakade was having a meeting with some community leaders when the assailants struck.
A close family source, who preferred anonymity, said that the assailants also smashed Solaja's head with a bottle before throwing him down from the storey building.
He said that the gunmen later made away with the monarch's car, an undisclosed sum of money and his wife's jewelry.
“The incident was purely an assassination attempt; the Kabiyesi (Oba Onakade) was with some community leaders at his palace.
“About six men, fully armed with sophisticated weapons, came and rough-handled the monarch,’’ the source said, adding that the matter had been reported at Ikenne Police Station.
The source said that Solaja, who had been rushed to the hospital, was responding to treatment.
When contacted, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Ogun, however, said that he had yet to get details of the attack. (NAN)
