The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has said that the environmental assessment report of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Ogoniland cannot be implemented without the Federal Government negotiating with the people first.
?Chairman of MOSOP Provisional Council, Professor Ben Naanen, who stated this while speaking to newsmen at Bori, headquarters of Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, said the people of Ogoni need to have a voice in the implementation of the UNEP report.
?Naanen said: “Our position is that the Federal Government has to talk to the Ogoni people before the implementation of that report. There are two sides to that particular issue. One is? the implementation of the UNEP report.
?“Another one is to talk to Ogoni people so that they will have a voice in the implementation of that report. It is not enough to stay in Abuja and send contractors to Ogoni.”
?He warned that the people of Ogoni would not cooperate with anybody sent by the Federal Government for the implementation of the report without coming to a round-table with the people of the area.
