Gunmen on Thursday attacked traders of Eke Awka main market during an executive meeting of chairmen and secretaries of the various lines and zones in the market, disrupting the gathering.
An eyewitness told LEADERSHIP WEEKEND that the gunmen, numbering about seven stormed the market hall, venue of the meeting, causing a stampede among the over 70 market executives who all scampered to safety.
However, it was gathered that no life was lost during the attack, though some persons were said to have sustained minor injuries from the attack just as the interim chairman of the market, Hon Kenneth Onuorah, was dispossessed of his bag containing N250,000 and other valid market documents.
Onuorah in an interview with journalists yesterday after traders of the market staged a protest rally against the Thursday incident confirmed the incident, stating that the gunmen were sent after him and the new executives by a former chairman of the market, Chief Christian Nwozor, who has since expressed his disapproval of the appointment of the interim committee.
