An Akure Chief Magistrates’ court has ordered a 38-year-old man, Lomi Akinpelumi, to be remanded in prison custody for allegedly killing his son.
The accused is standing trial for the alleged killing of his one-year-old son, Sileola Akinpelumi, by strangulation.
The accused was alleged to have committed the offence on May 5, 2012 at about 10 p.m. at Orita Ojo area of the Odigbo magisterial district.
The prosecuting police officer, ASP Pelumi Adejuwon, said the offence was contrary to and punishable under Section 316 of the Criminal Code Cap 30 Vol. I Laws of Ondo State 2006.?
The accused could not enter a plea when the charge was read to him in Yoruba as the offence bordered on murder which was outside the jurisdiction of the court.
Counsel to the accused, Mr Kehinde Orungbeja, prayed the court to grant the accused bail on liberal terms in view of the nature of the charge.
Refusing the bail application, the Chief Magistrate, Mr Igbekele Akinyele, advised the accused to approach the High Court for his bail application, and adjourned the matter to July 16 for mention.
The Magistrate also ordered that the duplicate copies of the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.
