The House of Representatives on Thursday called on DANA Airline to pay 171 dollars being? 30 per cent compensation to the families of the victims of the recent crash.
The House in its resolution in Abuja said the compensation became necessary in line with the Montreal treaty convention.
The lawmakers also called on all airlines whose planes had crashed earlier? to comply by paying the 30 per cent compensation and full compensation where investigation had been concluded.
The Montreal agreement is an international agreement on Aviation liabilities in which 30 per cent compensation should be paid within 30 days to the families of air crash victims.
It will be recalled that on June 3, a DANA airline crashed in Lagos killing all passengers on board.
This resolution was sequel to a motion moved by Rep. Yakubu Balogun ( ACN –Lagos ) which was unanimously adopted when put to vote by Speaker Aminu Tambuwal.
Leading the debate on the merit of the motion, Rep. Balogun noted that families of the victims in the DANA crash had yet to be compensated in accordance with the Montreal agreement.
According to Balogun ,there exist a compensation agreement known as the Montreal agreement that Nigeria entered into that an advanced payment? of 30 per cent compensation be paid.
“The payment is expected to be made? within? the first 30 days to the families of air crash victims,’’ Balogun said..
He urged the House to make sure that DANA airline adhered strictly to the provisions of the agreement.
In his contribution in support of the motion,Rep. Nnenna Ukeje ( PDP- Abia ) said that families of the victims of the DANA air crash had yet to get compensation.
She urged the House to prevail on DANA to immediately pay the compensation to the affected families.
‘’ We must hold DANA to do what they should do, so that the victims’ families can have some succuor.’’Rep. Peter Edeh ( PDP – Ebonyi ) said.
Since the motion was not opposed, it was subsequently adopted by the House. (NAN )
