Unknown assailants on Wednesday killed Mr John Daring, PDP Chairman in Sharubutu Ward of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau.
Also killed by the attackers, who struck at Rim, a village in the area, were Daring's wife and their child.
“The name of the man is John Daring; he was murdered by unknown persons along with his wife and child,'' Mr Abuh Emmanuel, Plateau Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) said.
Emmanuel told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Thursday that the trio were on their way home from Rahoss market when they were killed.
He explained that the attackers, who laid an ambush, pounced on them and hacked them to death, using machetes.
The police officer said that no arrest had been made, but that the matter was being investigated and vowed that the perpetrators would be arrested and brought to book.
He described the incident as disheartening, and wondered why people were still bent on shedding blood in spite of efforts to restore peace in Plateau.
Emmanuel called on the people of Riyom to exercise some restraint and resist the temptation to take the laws into their hands.
Mr Simon Jok, Former Deputy Chairman of Riyom Local Government Area, who reacted to the incident, confirmed that Daring, until his death, was the PDP Chairman in Sharubutu Ward.
Jok described the murder of the three family members as unfortunate and wicked, and called on the authorities to “do something'' about the constant attacks on Riyom community.
“It is clear that we are under siege; government must be proactive to stem the trend,'' he said.
NAN recalls that unknown attackers on Friday killed six other people at Tidiu Village in Kombun District of Mangu Local Government. (NAN)
