Reps To Decide Motion On Deployment Of 3, 500 Soldiers To Edo

The House of Representatives on Wednesday resolved to take a decision on a motion on the deployment of 3, 500 soldiers to Edo preparatory to Saturday’s governorship election.

The motion, brought by Rep. Bimbo Daramola (ACN-Ekiti) on the recent deployment of army personnel to the state expressed concern on the large number of troops deployed for the forthcoming exercise.

Earlier, Daramola had hardly finished moving his motion and yet to express his prayers when some members started shouting on him.

The Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal then put the question for voice votes on whether the matter was urgent enough to be debated by the House.

When the question was put across, there was no clear cut majority vote between those for and against the motion.

The Speaker then announced that the division and voting on the matter would be done at Thursday plenary session.

?Meanwhile, the House has mandated its Committees on Sports and Foreign Affairs to investigate the failure of Nigerian athletes and officials to participate in the 11th International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Junior Championship in Barcelona, Spain.

The mover of the motion, Rep. Ayo Omidiran, said they could not participate in the tournament due to non-issuance of visas to the Nigerian delegation by Spanish embassy officials.

Rep. Omidiran representing (ACN-Osun) said that the 11thIAAF World Junior Championship started on Tuesday July 10 in Barcelona, Spain.

Omidiran, who is the Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Sports said that the athletes said Nigerian athletes and officials submitted their applications for visas more than two weeks to the tournament.??

He urged the House to mandate the relevant committees to investigate the matter and come up with suggestions to forestall future occurrence.

The committee, headed by Rep. Godfrey Gaya is expected to report to the House within seven days.
