The Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, Sen. Joy Emodi, on Wednesday described the confirmation of Justice Aloma Mukhtar as Nigeria’s first female Chief Justice as “historic.''
Emodi, who spoke to journalists in Abuja after the Senate’s confirmation of Mukhtar, also said it was “a victory for Nigerian women''.
She added that it was a demonstration of the President Goodluck Jonathan's commitment to the cause of women in the country.
“The appointment of a woman to head the judiciary arm of government, for the first time since independence, is a victory for women. This is a great moment in history.
“By this action, President Jonathan has added a new dimension to his promise of gender inclusive government and promoting women. He has indeed uplifted women to a greater height.''
Emodi expressed confidence in the ability of the new Chief Justice to make tremendous impact on the nation's judicial system.
She called on women in the country to work hard so as to attain higher responsibilities.
“ I believe with her extraordinary accomplishments and groundbreaking records in the judiciary, she will come up with lots of solutions to several problems in the judiciary.
“I call on Nigerian women to embrace education and professional excellence fundamental to promoting them in our society.
“ The appointment of the lady CJN is also a sign that hard work and integrity pay in Nigeria. Women should ensure that their girl-child is properly educated and trained.''
The adviser commended the Senate for its “significant role in this historic process''. ?
