The Nigerian Police Council (NPC) yesterday confirmed the appointment of Mr. Mohammed Abubakar as the substantive Inspector-General of the Nigerian Police. The decision was taken at the council’s meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.
Abubakar was appointed in acting capacity by President Jonathan on January 25, following the compulsory retirement of his predecessor, Hafiz Ringim, and six Deputy Inspectors of Police DIGs.
The president had said that the decision was an initial step towards the comprehensive re-organisation and repositioning of the Police to make it more effective and capable of meeting emerging internal security challenges.
The meeting was attended by Vice-President Namadi Sambo; Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Chief Pius Osayande, the 36 state governors and the FCT minister.
Addressing newsmen after his confirmation, the IGP thanked Jonathan and the council for the confidence reposed in him and promised an improvement in security management.
He said: “Today, after my confirmation, I want to reassure Nigerians that I will do everything humanly possible and put my best to ensure the improvement of safety and security management in the security of this country.”
