The Assistant Director of Monitoring and Enforcement, Development Control Department of Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), Nathaniel Atebije, has given strong reasons why Mpape, a settlement in Bwari Area Council, is the major target for the forthcoming demolition exercise.
In a chat with LEADERSHIP SUNDAY, he said Mpape residents generate lots of waste that flow into the Lower Usman Dam which is the main source of water supply in the city, adding that its continued existence endangers the lives of FCT residents.
According to him: “One of the serious reasons why Mpape is the main target is that there is quite a lot of waste that goes into the stream. The stream is the only source feeding the Lower Usman Dam and that is where the water source for FCT residents comes from.
“If these places are allowed to exist, we are only putting the lives of the FCT residents at danger, because that is the source of water that flow into FCT. So, it is a very critical reason why some illegal structures in Mpape cannot stand.”
He however debunked insinuations that Mpape settlement was a free zone for people to carry out development without seeking approval.
this simply means dat d only way to remedy d waste flowing to usman dam is to render millions of people homeless..this is so inhuman. Are they not Nigerians? Why do we treat the less privileged with so much venom? Its so unfair
